August 2025 Update

News on recent and upcoming events!

This month, the museum is experimenting with more opening days following a successful Saturday opening during the Festival of Archaeology in July. The museum will be open on Saturday, 16th August & 23rd August, 11 am - 3 pm, alongside its regular opening hours on Fridays.

Example of the pottery in The Roman Bath’s collection:

The Festival of Archaeology opening was held alongside The Roman Baths’ event, Found in Combe Down. Held in the Church Rooms, this event allowed the public a rare chance to see items found in Combe Down’s underground stone quarries, which are normally kept in The Roman Baths’ stores.

The museum is also in the early stages of its research project into the lives of the wives of the men who worked in Combe Down’s underground stone quarry industry. If you have any stories you wish to share about your family history research relating to this, we’d love to hear from you, so feel free to drop by the museum on one of our opening days or email us at info@museumofbathstone.org

The Lost Keys at Combe Down Fest:

The museum’s volunteers were also at Combe Down Fest, which was held at Firs Field in July. It was a great opportunity for us to discuss our work with people during that hot weekend. We were there, alongside our friends from the Combe Down Heritage Society, The Friends of Bath Jewish Burial Ground, and The Cleveland Pools Trust. Please join the Heritage Society’s newsletter and follow the Jewish Burial Ground’s Facebook page to stay up-to-date on events.

On the 26th of July, the students of The Seasons Art Class - Bath displayed their artwork from this past term for their summer exhibition! If you’ve been looking for an art class, you can contact sdseasonsartbath@gmail.com for more information about their future term dates.

To make better use of our limited space, we have installed a new stand for our gift shop. If you would like to see the books we have on offer, please visit our website.

Upcoming events:

Combe Down Art Trail: Saturday 13th - Sunday 14th September, 10am - 4pm

As part of the Combe Down Art Trail this year, the museum will have on display a “Snapshot” exhibition, which will feature a piece of artwork from each participating artist in the art trail, giving visitors a taste of what’s on offer in each venue. We will also have works exhibited by three artists, landscape paintings by Rachel Ward, portrait paintings by Alex Cooper and ceramic animals by Sally Gardiner.

Heritage Open Days: Saturday 20th-Sunday 21st September

The museum will have two additional opening days during the national festival. Please go to their website to see other events on in Bath.
